Faculty Development Groups

Facilitated by Joanna Maulbeck (Behavioral Sciences)

A faculty learning community that explores the central tenets of civic learning and democratic engagement (CLDE) as a teaching and learning practice, as well as how to certify CLDE experiences at Kingsborough, create assignments, and incorporate and assess CLDE learning outcomes in your course and department/program.

Learning Goals/Outcomes:

Build a shared language of how civic learning and democratic engagement has been conceptualized and approached at Kingsborough at the institutional, program/departmental, and individual instructor levels since 2011.

Review how civic learning and democratic engagement has been certified and approached in various classes at Kingsborough since 2016.

Build an understanding of current best practices in the literature and practical frameworks for equitable civic learning and democratic engagement and assessment.

Create an action plan for civic learning and democratic engagement in your class aligned with your departmental/programmatic and Kingsborough’s strategic plan.

About the facilitator Joanna Maulbeck (Behavioral Sciences)

Joanna Maulbeck, Ph.D., is Lecturer of Education. She has experience working with students at various levels, from preschool through adulthood, and is passionate about equitable, student-centered, experiential learning for all. She has developed and facilitated creative and student-centered opportunities for preschool and elementary, as well as secondary and college students to engage in civic learning and democratic engagement while teaching in Mali, South Africa, and the United States. She currently co-directs the Center for Civic Engagement at Kingsborough.
