Deciding to return to college, she enrolled at Kingsborough Community College to study fashion design. “I have always loved using fashion as an outlet to express my creativity and wanted to learn everything I could about fashion history and the process of creating a garment—from brainstorming new concepts to patternmaking, down to sewing the last stitch,” she shared.

Valeria Daffarra

Valeria had already started learning programming languages on her own and wanted to explore the field further, so she enrolled at Kingsborough as a computer information systems major. She shared that she found her Java II class challenging and credits Prof. Eileen Lichtenthal, whom she calls an “outstanding teacher and programmer,” with encouraging her to do her best and not give up. While at Kingsborough, Valeria rediscovered her passion for math and engineering. And she has excelled. An honor student, she is also a member of the international honor society Phi Theta Kappa.

Tanzeela Jahangir moved from a small village in Pakistan to New York in 2022 to explore the educational opportunities offered here. “Coming from a quiet, peaceful village to the most fast-paced and crowded city was a big transition—and a little challenging for me,” she admitted. She chose to major in graphic design with a concentration in user experience (UX) .

Liam chose liberal arts to keep his options open. “I love the professors and the amazing courses that are offered to me as a liberal arts student. I was genuinely able to explore myself and my personality through my coursework at Kingsborough.”
Jaiden Pinnock
Media Arts Major
Jaiden is majoring in media arts and has not wavered, taking every opportunity to hone his skills. “It helps me pursue my passion of being a sports analyst.” This semester, Jaiden will relaunch his radio show Coach Potatoes every Tuesday at 3 p.m. on WKRB, KCC's radio station, which went on hiatus between semesters.

Weeks after graduating from St. Edmund Preparatory High School in 2015, William Smith Jr. followed a family tradition, becoming a fourth-generation Local 40 ironworker. At the age of 26, he forged a new path. He enrolled at Kingsborough Community College, becoming the first in his family to attend college.
