Bike Patrol

Bike Patrol

The City University of New York implemented the Bicycle Patrol in 1997 at Kingsborough and several other colleges. The bicycle patrol program has proven to be an excellent method of policing the campus in a cost-effective manner and a good way to bring officers into contact with the community. While the Bicycle Patrols is not intended to replace vehicular patrols, it is responsible for the reduction of vehicle miles.

There are many benefits associated with bicycle patrols. The mobility of the bicycles enables officers to patrol areas more frequently and to move silently in and out of any area. Bike patrols can move through areas of congestion with relative ease compared to police cruisers. Violators on bicycles can be easily pursued regardless of the route they may take. Contact with the community increases as the officers on bicycles are more approachable than those in automobiles.
