Professor Scott Andrew Cally
New Chair of Department of Communications and Performing Arts

Native New Yorker Scott Andrew Cally, associate professor, union leader, and the new chairperson of the department of communications and performing arts, has been at Kingsborough for over 15 years. While he admits that the College is going through a stressful time, and it has been a challenge managing with scarce resources, he is confident the work of Kingsborough will be beneficial to students in the long run.

Scott hadn’t planned to remain at Kingsborough, but he’s still here, defending faculty and staff more than a decade later. “It really is just about the people. More than anything, we have a great staff. Our junior faculty are wonderful, and among our senior faculty have been some really great accomplishments over the years,” said Scott.

He believes that his experience as union chair has primed him for this new position.  “I have a lot of knowledge coming into the job, so I’m familiar with what needs to be done. There is a certain overlap because both jobs are about supporting faculty,” said Scott. “I argue for faculty and other members; it’s in my nature, I guess. They make the institution what it is.”

Seeing the list of students who have gone on to Ivy League schools, which is indicative of the quality of the curriculum and KCC faculty, has been a pleasure for Scott. “Many of our students wind up at NYU, Columbia, and many others,” he said.

Scott and his colleagues are preparing to make some major changes within his department. “The arts were among the most decimated programs during the pandemic,” Scott points out. “We will begin by focusing on redefining what the department will look like. Recruitment is a priority.”

Increasing awareness of the benefits of the department goes a long way toward increasing enrollment. “I really want to push knowledge of our programs out there by highlighting our faculty and their expertise and scholarship.”

Congratulations Scott!
