KCC's  Department of History, Philosophy, & Political Science is pleased to announce its first completed OER (Open Educational Resources) project of this year, an incredible and timely COVID-19 compilation on the CUNY Academic Commons by Dr. Jose Nanin from the Health, Physical Education, and Recreation department, with a plan for  hypothes.is  integration/conversation.

The COVID-19 Comprehensive Resource for Education, Health, and Administrative Services is a one-stop hub for current COVID-19 information for faculty, staff, and administrators. This resource, which was funded by the New York State OER Grant, is curated and maintained by Dr. Jose Nanin, professor in the Community Health Program at Kingsborough, and provides access to credible, evidence-based COVID-19 medical and technical information (including epidemiological data updates and peer-reviewed publications); prevention and treatment information; course syllabi and lessons; policy “white papers;” research- and practice-based “grey literature;” and local community resources.

When asked what motivated him to create this resource given the ocean of primary source data on official websites, he responded:

"I have colleagues at other educational and health-oriented institutions that have been producing work related to COVID, and I was collecting those resources for me to use in my classes and my administrative work. In addition, it takes a significant amount of time to cut through all the various news and information sites to find information that is not based on conspiracy theories, debunked research, and misinformed opinions. Since I was already doing the work and knew that I would need to continue, I thought 'why don’t I share this with others who may need this?' And here we are!"

Dr. Nanin is enthusiastic about helping the community separate the wheat from the chaff so they are able to receive important facts on COVID.

"I hope other educators, researchers, staff members, administrators, and students will use this as a starting point for seeking information on COVID-19, to supplement information they have already found, and/or to verify the credibility of information they currently have.  We really need to have factual and reliable information on this pandemic if we are going to effectively prevent it, manage it, and eventually, eradicate it in our society."

Dr. Nanin encourages users to interact with the resource through  Hypothes.is , a free and open social annotation tool for the web.
