KCC Spirit Day Fun and Funds

On November 28, 2023, the Office of Institutional Advancement hosted KCC Spirit Day, which is celebrated annually on Giving Tuesday to foster a sense of giving campuswide. The event was part of the CUNY Tuesday fundraising efforts, with proceeds going toward the Kingsborough Community College Foundation, which supports the needs of our students, faculty and the College. This year’s $50,000 goal was exceeded, with the college raising over $52,000 toward student scholarships. This was made possible with the help of generous donors, participants, and supporters.

KCC Spirit Day brought together the College’s various departments to form teams that competed in games against colleagues. The teams also donated prizes that were raffled off during the event, with proceeds going to the Foundation. As a special touch for this year’s event, and to tie into the College's 60th anniversary, the theme of this year’s Spirit Day was NYC Street Games. Several non-competitive games were added to the lineup, such as Skully, Hopscotch, Hit the Penny, and fan-favorite Double Dutch. Teams took turns playing these games and then rotated through the competitive games in 15-minute intervals. Professor Juan Franquiz’s Physical Education and Recreation students assisted in the creation, set up, and scoring of the custom competitive games and led the team members through intense rounds of Newcomb, Corner Spy, Tunnel Ball Relay, and Modified Handball. Each team played their hearts out on the court and fought to represent their respective offices and departments. This year, 18 teams took part and the energy was high among all participants.
Spirit day

“KCC Spirit Day is an example of what can be done when alumni, faculty, staff, former employees, retirees, and students take the time to commemorate 60 years of a college that serves the needs of students who deserve an opportunity to pursue their education regardless of barriers,” said VP for Institutional Advancement Nancy Sanchez-Badillo. “KCC Spirit Day made it possible to fundraise over $52,000, all of which will go to support our students. This grows out of the commitment and dedication of everyone who gave and deserve to be celebrated.”

The event’s sponsor was Metro Health Plus. We were also joined by alumni from Crunch Fitness who set up a booth and contributed swag bags that were raffled off as door prizes throughout the event. Retired professor Susan Lavin, who came to show her support, unexpectedly bumped into her former student, Grace, who happened to be one of the Crunch Fitness representatives. Connections like these, as well as those on the court, help bring the community together.

As the games wound down, final raffles and prizes were announced. Teams decorated KCC 60th Anniversary non-edible cakes. The winner, chosen through anonymous voting, was Team PolymeRacers from the Biology Department with a campus replica that included the MAC building, Shimoda sculpture and more. The Golden Shoe award for the largest amount donated went to the Cluster Buster team, headed by spirited team captain Judy Cohen. The final award of the day was the Spirit Award given to the team that earned the most points in the competitive games. This award came down to a tie between Students First and Crime Fighters, however, it was decided through a tense game of rock, paper, scissors that Crime Fighters was the award winner. The words on everyone’s lips throughout the event were that having opportunities to take a break to have fun and interact with coworkers in different ways serves as a great morale boost and motivation through challenging times. When we find methods to work in collaborative ways, our students and community benefit the most.
