Kingsborough Community College President Named To HERS Board

Higher Education Research Services (HERS) recently named Kingsborough Community College (KCC) President Claudia V. Schrader, MA, Ed.M., EdD to their Board of Directors. Dr. Schrader, who took the helm as president of KCC in September 2018, is the College’s 7th president and holds the distinction of being the first African American in the College’s 58-year history to hold that office.

“I am proud to serve as a member of the HERS Board of Directors because of the organization’s proven success and deep impact on the development of women. It’s gratifying to see the network of support between and among women from diverse backgrounds, and at all levels. HERS prepares women to navigate the paths to effective leadership successfully. In the words of Maya Angelou, being a part of HERS means I may come as one, but I stand as, for, and with thousands,” said Dr. Schrader.

Founded in 1972, HERS is a leadership development and research organization dedicated to creating and sustaining a diverse network of women leaders in higher education. Through various programs that support women in different stages of their careers, HERS provides program participants with transformational experiences and opportunities that result in more vital higher education institutions. HERS believes that impactful leadership not only requires women in leadership positions but demands that each woman bring her unique voice and perspective to her leadership role.

“With significant experience implementing principles of diversity, equity, inclusion and justice in colleges and universities, Dr. Schrader will enrich the Board of Directors as HERS creates and supports a diverse network of women leaders prepared to implement DEIJ principles throughout higher education,” said HERS Interim President Carolyn P. Landis.

“Dr. Schrader brings to the HERS Board of Directors a wealth of experience in higher education leadership at an exciting time.  The new census data provides unequivocal evidence that the country’s demographics has shifted in a major way. I have no doubt that the role of community colleges in educating our society will be enhanced. It is incumbent upon HERS to ensure that we are doing everything we can to prepare leaders to chart the way forward. President Schrader’s expertise will be invaluable in that endeavor,” added HERS Board Chair Tuajuanda Jordan.

Education has served as a vehicle for Dr. Schrader. She was born and raised on St. Croix, the largest of the United States Virgin Islands. She earned her undergraduate degree from Rutgers University and her Master of Arts, Master of Education, and Doctor of Education from Columbia University, Teachers College. Dr. Schrader also obtained a certificate from the Institute for Educational Management at the Graduate School of Education at Harvard University.

Prior to becoming president at Kingsborough, she served as provost and senior vice president at Bronx Community College, CUNY; as associate provost at William Paterson University of New Jersey; and as associate provost at Medgar Evers College, CUNY, where she also held faculty rank with tenure. Dr. Schrader also taught as an adjunct at Teachers College, Columbia University, Bank Street College, and the College of New Rochelle. Her professional service includes serving as a peer evaluator for the Middle States Commission on Higher Education; membership on the American Association of Community College’s (AACC) National Council for Black American Affairs; and a 3-year term on the AACC Commission on Diversity, Inclusion and Equity.
