Kingsborough Community College Receives $125G To Support Its Community Farm And Garden
Citing the KCC Community Farm and Garden program as “very futuristic,” New York State Assemblywoman Mathylde Frontus, representing Brookyn’s 46th district, yesterday presented Kingsborough Community College with a $125,000 check to assist in the development and expansion of the program.
“It is my pleasure to support KCC’s Community Farm and Garden, which prepares students for expertise in the rapidly expanding local food economy. I am proud to make this investment into the students and local community, and look forward to seeing the success of this initiative in years to come,” said Assemblywoman Frontus.
Accepting the check were KCC President Dr. Claudia V. Schrader; Dr. Simone Rodriguez, vice president of Workforce Development, Continuing Education & Strategic Partnerships; Christine Zagari-LoPorto, interim assistant dean; and Danielle LeCorps, gardener.
“On behalf of the College, thank you for your support. We asked, and you gave,” Schrader said. “Funding for the Farm and Garden comes at a time when students have had to endure one of the most challenging times ever in their academic history.”
The KCC Community Farm and Garden is an organic, year-round food production site that offers various vegetables, herbs, and flowers. It provides students with urban farming expertise and first-hand experience building a more sustainable food system. KCC’s Division of Workforce Development, Continuing Education and Strategic Partnerships oversees the KCC Community Farm and Garden. It will use the capital funds to support infrastructure improvements to the farm and garden. For a decade, the KCC Community Farm and Garden (formerly known as the KCC Urban Farm) has become the place for community members and college students to explore their role in local and global food systems. The on-campus site includes approximately 7,000 square feet for cultivation and learning experiences for the entire KCC community.
“Funding for this project will directly benefit the students and help combat food insecurity,” said Rodriguez. “Thanks to Assemblywoman Frontus’ funding, our commitment continues to make it easier for students to learn from produce grown, in addition to exposing them to healthy food options.”
