The College Discovery/ Bilingual Program is a New York State funded program designed to meet the needs of students who are considered to be academically under prepared and economically disadvantaged. The program monitors academic progress and pursuit. Counselors are available to discuss, analyze and offer services to overcome problems with classes and college life. Tutoring services are also available for those in need.
In order to be considered for the College Discovery/ Bilingual Program, students must complete the section marked "SEEK/CD" on the CUNY Admissions application. Students are only accepted as entering freshman in the initial fall semester. The only exception to this rule applies to students transferring to Kingsborough from another CUNY school who were already students under the SEEK or College Discovery Program.
If a student fails any part of the CUNY placement exam, the student is required to attend the Summer Immersion Program before entering the fall semester as an entering freshman.
Students are selected for the program based upon:
-
High school academic achievement
-
Economic criteria
-
Space availability.
Students must meet specific economic criteria to qualify for admission to the program. The Financial Aid Office is responsible for reviewing a student's family income to determine eligibility.
All students are required to complete the FAFSA and TAP applications and submit student and/or parent(s) income from the previous year.
Income can be as follows (whichever applies to the family):
-
Federal tax returns (1040,1040A or 1040EZ)
-
Public Assistance Budget Letter
-
Social Security Benefits Letter
-
Proof of untaxed income.
From a financial aid perspective:
-
College Discovery students are eligible to receive a maximum of six (6) semesters of TAP and CD aid **
-
College Discovery students may receive an award to cover the college's student activity fee **
-
College Discovery students may receive an award to help pay for some college textbooks **
** Depends on the availability of New York State funds
