Dr. Gordon Alley-Young was named dean of faculty at Kingsborough Community College in 2021. From 2016 to 2021, he served as the chairperson of the College’s department of communications and performing arts, where he is currently a professor of speech communication. Alley-Young is also a past president of CLASP, the CUNY League of Active Speech Professors.

Before joining KCC in 2004, he was a journalist and a media and community relations liaison in his native country of Canada.

Alley-Young has presented over 40 research papers at local, state, regional, national, and international conferences. Three of his papers have received recognition as top papers in their respective divisions. His research primarily focuses on critical cultural studies of communication, media, and popular culture (e.g., depictions of teachers, students, and the school experience; LGBTQAI+ social history/healthcare; feminist activism and iconography; terrorism and media/social media; white privilege and identity politics; journalistic hoaxes) and includes works published in Spanish, Turkish, and English.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in communication from Cape Breton University, two master’s degrees—one in communication and one in liberal studies with a concentration in women’s studies—from the University of Maine, and a Ph.D. in speech communication from Southern Illinois University.
